Explore by Map shows two kinds of place alongside the locations you add in the CMS. Nearby places are cafés, shops, gyms and similar, found live from Mapbox and ranked by how close they are to the centre of your map. Landmarks are the notable buildings Mapbox already draws on the basemap, which students can now select to see the name and, where Mapbox supplies one, a category. Neither needs setting up.
Students filter nearby places by eight categories, being Food & Drink, Shops, Lodging & Services, Sport & Leisure, Parks, Health, Education, and Arts & Culture, and see up to ten places at a time, each with its distance from the centre of your map. That ten is the total across whatever categories are selected, not ten per category. A nearby place can then be selected and routed to, exactly like one of your own locations.
How to Set It Up
There is nothing to set up. Nearby places and selectable landmarks appear on Explore by Map, and there is no CMS setting to enable, disable or restrict them.
They are deliberately off on the mini-map inside a guided tour, which has no panel to show a place in.
Best Practices & Use Cases
- You cannot curate what appears. Nearby places show whatever Mapbox holds, including businesses you would not have chosen. Add your own map marker where you need control over how somewhere is described
FAQs & Troubleshooting
Can I turn nearby places off? There is no CMS setting to disable them or limit which categories are offered on Explore by Map. They do not appear on the mini-map inside a guided tour, and a student filtering by one of your own Map categories sees only your locations.
Can I choose which businesses appear, or remove one? No. The listings come from Mapbox, not from your CMS.
A nearby place has the wrong name, or is in the wrong spot. There is nothing to correct in your CMS, but the data is not fixed either. Anyone can suggest a correction to Mapbox at labs.mapbox.com/contribute: find the place, select it, and choose Suggest an edit. You can change the name, address or category. Give an email address so Mapbox can tell you what happened to it. Corrections are reviewed rather than applied immediately, so allow time before the change reaches your map.
Is the distance shown a walking time? No. It is the straight-line distance from the centre of your map. Students should use directions for travel time.
