A real-time transcript follows the video as it plays, dimming the lines around the one being spoken so a student can read along. You supply the timings by uploading an SRT or VTT file.
It appears in the same place as a typed transcript, behind the same Show transcription control, but the text tracks the video instead of sitting still. The file is not shown as captions over the video itself.
This is available on ambassador videos, guided tour stops, a tour's Introduction and End Screen, and the homepage Welcome Video.
How to Set It Up
Prerequisites
- The media must already be added. On ambassador videos and tour stops the Real Time Transcription toggle appears once Inline Video / Audio is filled, and an audio file counts. On a tour Introduction or End Screen it needs an MP4 or WebM source, and an End Screen also has to be enabled
- A subtitle file in SRT or VTT format. No other format is accepted
- Timings in the file must match the video you uploaded, not an earlier cut
Navigation steps
- Open the item that holds the media, whether that is an ambassador bubble, a guided tour stop, a tour's Introduction or End Screen, or the homepage Welcome Video
- Switch on Real Time Transcription
- Upload your subtitle file to Real Time Transcription Source
- Click "Update" to save
The manual Transcription field disappears when you switch the toggle on, and comes back if you switch it off. An item carries one or the other, never both.
Best Practices & Use Cases
- Use real-time transcription wherever you have timings, and keep the plain Transcription field for videos you only have a flat script for. Both are better than nothing, and the toggle lets you mix the two across a tour
- Export the subtitle file from the same cut of the video you upload. Trimming or re-cutting the video afterwards shifts every line out of step by the same amount, because the timings are absolute
- Transcribe the videos students are most likely to rely on first, such as course talks and anything with a named speaker, rather than trying to do every video at once
FAQs & Troubleshooting
Which file formats can I upload? SRT and VTT only.
Where has the Transcription field gone? Switching Real Time Transcription on replaces it with the file upload. Switch the toggle off to get the manual field back, along with anything you had typed in it.
I cannot see the Real Time Transcription toggle. It only appears once the item has media on it. Add the video or audio first, save, and the toggle appears. On a tour End Screen the screen also has to be enabled.
Can a guided tour End Screen have a transcript? Yes, once the End Screen is enabled and has an MP4 or WebM source. Its field is called Transcript rather than Transcription, and it is a plain text box.
