Due to internet restrictions in mainland China (commonly referred to as the "Great Firewall"), users trying to access the Vepple platform from within the country may experience varying levels of accessibility. The outcome often depends on the user's specific location, internet provider, and the nature of the content being accessed.
This article outlines the three most common scenarios users in China may encounter, and what each means for their experience on Vepple.
What Can Happen When a User Accesses Vepple from China?
Full Access to the Vepple Experience
In this scenario, no content is blocked, and the user can access the full Vepple platform as intended.
- The experience is identical to users in other parts of the world.
- Content personalisation is selected manually by the user (e.g., study level, subject area, or region).
- Videos and other media are displayed via their default sources (e.g., YouTube, Bilibili, YouKu, Weibo).
Partial Access : Some Features or Media Blocked
In this case, certain services may be blocked, depending on local restrictions.
- A common example is YouTube being blocked in most parts of China.
- Vepple supports fallback video sources. For instance, if a user can’t access a video hosted on YouTube, it will automatically switch to a secondary platform like Bilibili (if provided).
- Other blocked functionality may require the use of a VPN to access.
No Access : Site Doesn’t Load
If the Vepple site doesn’t load at all, this typically means the domain is blocked at the network level.
- Users may need to use a VPN service to access the platform in this scenario.
Important Notes
- Vepple has no control over the restrictions imposed by the Chinese internet infrastructure.
- We are unable to provide specific advice or guarantees regarding availability in any given region within China.
- IP-based personalisation (e.g., auto-detecting a user’s location) is not used due to its unreliability and potential for incorrect assumptions (such as travellers or VPN users).
