API |
Application Programming Interface - imagine you're at a pizza
place. You know what you want, but you don't go into the kitchen
to make the pizza yourself. Instead, you tell the waiter what
you want, and the waiter communicates that to the kitchen staff.
In this scenario, you're the user, the waiter is the API (Application
Programming Interface), and the kitchen staff are the servers
or systems that do the actual work (Vepple). The API acts as
the intermediary, taking your request (like asking for a specific
pizza) and passing it along to the kitchen (Vepple), then bringing
back the result (your delicious pizza). So, an API basically
helps different software programs communicate and work together,
just like the waiter helps you get your pizza without going into
the kitchen yourself. In Vepple's case, our API lets 3rd party
systems access captured lead/behavioural data. |
API end points |
Think of an API endpoint like a specific window at the pizza
place where you can place your order. Each window is for a different
type of pizza. So, if you want a pepperoni pizza, you go to the
pepperoni window; if you want a vegetarian pizza, you go to the
veggie window, and so on. Similarly, an API endpoint is like a specific address or location on the internet where you can ask for certain information or perform certain actions. Each endpoint is designed for a specific purpose, like getting information about users, posting new data, or deleting something. So, when you use an API endpoint, you're essentially going to that specific window to make a request for the data or action you need. On Vepple, we have endpoints for events, leads, user behaviour etc |

Call to action | A prompt encouraging users to take a specific action, often linked to marketing or engagement. |
Chat block | External platforms including Unibuddy, The Ambassador Platform (TAP) and Chatify can be embedded within Vepple enabling end-users to speak to students/staff directly within Vepple without ever leaving (though a second sign-in is required for some services) |
Checklist | An interactive 'to-do' list, offering two main benefits: they enhance navigation by tracking progress during virtual tours, helping to prioritise and highlight key content for strategic engagement, and they bridge the gap between virtual and physical experiences by guiding users through prescribed offline activities; for example a checklist of things to do ahead of an in-person open day with a view to increasing attendance. |
Clear Cache | The process of erasing cached data to ensure the website displays the most recent content. |
Content grid block | The Content Grid block displays text and photos in a column or grid layout. It is extremely versatile. CRM integration via Zapier | Facilitates access to captured lead and behavioral tracking data for integration with external systems, including CRMs, via Zapier, offering a no-code solution for data management. |
CSV export | Offers a manual export option for captured lead/behavioral data from an interactive dashboard, catering to those not ready for full API integration or Zapier use. |
Custom CSS | Allows universities to customize site design elements like colors, layouts, fonts, enhancing the site's visual appeal and brand alignment beyond default offerings. |
Custom filtering | Extends personalisation options beyond academic levels, allowing users to apply filters based on location (e.g., UK/International), relationship to the student (e.g., parent/carer), stage in the recruitment cycle, and more. This can be configured for visibility to end-users or for direct linking via CRM, supporting tailored experiences for various user groups like international agents or during specific events like clearing or open days. |
Custom types |
In WordPress, custom post types are a powerful feature that allow
developers to create new types of content entries besides the
default ones like posts and pages. These custom post types can
be anything from 'products' in an e-commerce store to 'events'
in an event management site. Each custom post type can have its
own set of custom fields and taxonomies, making them an essential
tool for creating complex, content-driven websites. They help
in organizing the CMS's content management system to cater to
specific content needs, providing structured content that can
be displayed and queried in various ways. |

Events | All virtual, physical, live and on-demand talks and events are brought together in one place. The personalisation means that users only see talks that are relevant to them based on their chosen preferences. We're streaming-platform agnostic, that is, we can work with pretty much any streaming platform wither by directly embedding (preferred - Blackboard,Youtube, Facebook Live) or by linking out ( Zoom, MS Teams, GoToWebinar etc). Crucially, irrespective of platform used, all event attendance is tracked and recorded within the user's profile, enabling the university to get accurate attendance analytics even if different platforms are used to deliver each talk. They are gated by default and will always require students to sign in. |
Explore by map | Allows all content housed within the experience to be browsed geographically helping users to gain a sense of space and place. On mobile devices with GPS, users can see their current location alongside relvant content that's nearby. |

Flexible Gating mode | Flexible Gating mode allows specific parts of the experience to be locked, requiring either the completion of a lead capture form if optimising for volume or, sign-in/registration if in behaviour tracking mode. This mode leverages the "authentication required" toggle on individual posts/sections. |

It allows clients to request exactly the data they need, making it easier to develop APIs that are adaptable to the needs of diverse clients. |
Graphical Uiser Interface (GUI) | A graphical user interface (GUI) is an interface through which a user interacts with electronic devices such as computers and smartphones through the use of icons, menus and other visual indicators or representations (graphics). This will come in especially handy when you want to give prospective students a glimpse of the experience and what more there is to come. |
Interface types | Predefined ways through which themes and plugins interact with WordPress core. These 'interfaces' could be the functions, hooks, actions, and filters provided by WordPress that allow developers to extend the functionality of the core system without modifying its code directly. |

Web Component |
Let's imagine you're building a house, and you want to add some
decorative elements to it. HTML5 web components are like pre-made,
customizable decorations that you can easily add to your house. For example, let's say you want to add a fancy lamp to your living room. With HTML5 web components, you don't have to build the lamp from scratch. Instead, you can use a pre-made lamp component that someone else has created. This lamp component comes with all the necessary parts and instructions on how to use it. You can simply place it in your living room and customize it to fit your style - maybe change the color or the size. Similarly, in web development, HTML5 web components are pre-made pieces of code that you can use to add functionality or design elements to your website or web application. These components are like building blocks that you can easily integrate into your project without having to write all the code from scratch. Just like decorating your house with pre-made decorations, using HTML5 web components can save you time and effort in web development. |
